At the Mondulkiri Project, we have welcomed visitors during every month of the year since 2014.

Many first-time visitors assume they should only come during the dry season. Yet several of our indigenous Bunong guides tell us October and November are among their favourite months, when the forests remain intensely green, waterfalls are flowing strongly and visitor numbers are lower than during the December–January peak.

Our busiest months are usually December and January, so booking accommodation and tours in advance is advisable during this period.

“We were nervous about visiting in August because of the rain, but the short afternoon shower actually cooled the jungle down perfectly. The waterfalls were roaring, and we hardly saw another group all day.”

Every month offers a different experience in Mondulkiri. Since welcoming visitors throughout the year since 2014, we’ve seen how dramatically the forests, waterfalls, weather and wildlife change from season to season.

If you’re wondering what Mondulkiri is like during a specific month, here’s what you can expect.

January is one of the coolest and driest months of the year, making it one of the best times to visit Mondulkiri. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, trekking trails are generally dry, and visibility from viewpoints is excellent.

This is a popular month, so accommodation and ethical elephant tours should be booked several weeks in advance.

Best for: First-time visitors, trekking, photography and comfortable weather.

February remains dry and comfortable, although afternoons begin to warm slightly. Forest walks are still enjoyable, waterfalls continue flowing after the wet season, and visitor numbers are usually a little lower than in January.

Many locals consider February one of the best-balanced months of the year.

Best for: Elephant experiences, hiking and avoiding the busiest holiday period.

March is a shoulder-season month, bridging the cool dry season and the hotter months ahead. While much of Cambodia becomes increasingly hot during March, Mondulkiri’s higher elevation keeps temperatures noticeably more comfortable, making it one of the country’s best places to escape the late dry-season heat.

Early morning activities remain pleasant, especially forest walks with the elephants.

Best for: Travellers wanting quieter attractions before the rainy season.

April is usually Cambodia’s hottest month and includes Khmer New Year, one of the country’s busiest travel periods. While much of Cambodia becomes extremely hot, Mondulkiri’s elevation of around 800 metres keeps it noticeably cooler than the lowlands, making it a popular escape for visitors seeking fresher air and cooler mornings.

Early morning elephant walks and forest trekking are still very enjoyable before the afternoon heat builds.

Best for: Escaping Cambodia’s hottest weather, Khmer New Year and early morning outdoor adventures.

May is another shoulder-season month, sitting between the hot dry season and the wetter months ahead. Early rains begin refreshing the forests, temperatures gradually become more comfortable and the landscape starts turning green again.

Visitor numbers remain relatively low, making it a peaceful time to explore.

Best for: Good value, fewer tourists and the first signs of the rainy season.

June brings regular rainfall, although showers are often concentrated in the afternoon or evening rather than lasting all day. Forests become lush, streams begin flowing strongly and waterfalls grow more impressive each week.

Our elephant experiences continue operating throughout the month, although some trekking trails can become muddier.

Best for: Green landscapes, photography and nature lovers.

By July, Mondulkiri is at its greenest. Waterfalls are becoming spectacular, rivers are flowing strongly and the forests feel alive with fresh growth.

Rain is more frequent, but many visitors enjoy the quieter atmosphere and dramatic scenery.

Best for: Waterfalls, rainforest scenery and photographers.

August is one of the wettest months of the year, but also one of the most beautiful. The countryside is intensely green, waterfalls are near their peak and mist often hangs over the valleys during the mornings.

Road access via National Road 76 remains reliable, although some smaller forest tracks can become muddy.

Best for: Lush landscapes, waterfalls and travellers seeking fewer crowds.

September usually sees the highest water levels of the year. Bou Sra Waterfall and many smaller waterfalls are often at their most powerful, while forests remain rich green after months of rainfall.

If you’re visiting primarily for scenery, September is difficult to beat.

Best for: Waterfalls, photography and nature.

If we had to recommend one month based on our experience since 2014, October would be near the top of the list.

The forests remain brilliantly green, waterfalls are still flowing strongly, mornings often begin with mist over the valleys, and visitor numbers are much lower than during the December-January peak.

Several of our Bunong guides also consider October one of their favourite months for spending time in the forest.

Best for: Almost everything.

November combines the best of both seasons. The countryside remains green after the rains, waterfalls continue flowing well, temperatures become noticeably cooler and humidity drops.

It’s an excellent month for trekking, photography and ethical elephant experiences.

Best for: First-time visitors and anyone wanting the classic Mondulkiri experience.

December is one of the most popular months to visit Mondulkiri. Cool mornings, comfortable afternoons and reliable weather make it ideal for exploring.

Because it coincides with Christmas and New Year holidays, accommodation and tours often book out well in advance.

Best for: Families, trekking, photography and comfortable weather.

Ethical elephant experiences operate throughout the year.

During the dry season, trails are easier to walk and conditions are more predictable.

During the green season, forests are lush, streams are flowing, and the landscape feels especially vibrant.

If you prioritise easier walking, visit between November and February. If you prefer greener scenery, June to October can be equally rewarding.

During the wettest months, leeches can occasionally be encountered on forest trails. Long socks and closed footwear are usually sufficient protection.

For waterfalls, July to October is hard to beat.

Bou Sraa Waterfall, Romnea Waterfall, and smaller waterfalls around Dak Dam are often at their most impressive during this period.

After heavy rain in August and September, the volume of water is dramatically different from the dry season, making this the best time for waterfall photography.

The hills remain green, waterfalls continue flowing strongly, and morning mist is more common around viewpoints such as Samot Cheur (Sea Forest).

Many travellers assume the rainy season means constant rain, but showers are often concentrated in the afternoon or evening.

The reward is greener forests, stronger waterfalls, and fewer visitors.

The main downside is that some forest trails become muddy after heavy rain.

Packing for Mondulkiri depends on the season, but a few items will make your trip much more comfortable.

  • Hiking shoes or trail runners with good grip
  • Dry bag or waterproof cover for your camera and phone
  • Long socks for trekking, particularly on jungle trails during the wettest months
