Cambodia Elephant Rescue Organization
The Cambodia Elephant Rescue Organization is a registered local non-government organization. We are based in the town of Sen Monorom in Mondulkiri Province of Cambodia.
What we do
This NGO was formed to rescue and rehabilitate the captive elephant population in the province of Mondulkiri in eastern Cambodia.
The Cambodia Elephant Rescue Organization monitors all remaining captive elephants in Mondulkiri. Our goal is to see if there is a chance to improve their health and welfare. We achieve this by renting and buying elephants before their owners sell them to the Angkor Wat elephant riding business.
The Cambodia Elephant Rescue Organization’s main activity is to manage the Mondulkiri Project’s elephant sanctuary. At our sanctuary rescued elephants are able to socialise with other elephants. These elephants spend their days relaxing, eating, swimming and practicing other natural elephant behaviour.
The Cambodia Elephant Rescue Organization employs one of Cambodia’s top government vets to regularly perform health checks on all their elephants.
The Cambodia Elephant Rescue Organization protects elephant habitat from logging by renting a large area of community forest from two Indigenous villages. It has signed a 30 year lease with the Cambodian Government. It has already succeeding in preventing rubber companies from entering an important catchment area and wildlife habitat.
The NGO helps the local community by providing ecologically sustainable ecotourism employment at the elephant sanctuary. By teaching local Cambodians the importance of conservation the Organization hopes to encourage the development of more ecotourism projects in Cambodia.
The Cambodia Elephant Rescue Organization aims to educate locals and international visitors to encourage them to become advocates for the ethical treatment of Asian Elephants.
How you can help us
The Cambodian Elephant Rescue Organization does not receive any funding from the Cambodian Government. It relies on tour money from tourists visiting their Mondulkiri Project elephant sanctuary.
