2 Day Elephants & Full Day Jungle Trek

* * June to September is rainy season so the walking track can be wet and slippery which makes the trek more difficult **

Day One — Meet the Elephants

After an 8:30am pick-up in Sen Monorom, you drive to the sanctuary entrance with views across the protected forest valley that the Mondulkiri Project has helped preserve from logging since 2014.

At the Jungle Lodge you’ll meet your Bunong guide and hear the stories of Happy, Comvine and Princess — three rescued elephants who now live freely in this valley. The day is spent walking with the elephants through the forest, feeding them and observing them alongside their mahouts.

Evening is at the Jungle Lodge — your Bunong guide cooks a traditional meal over a campfire, there’s rice wine if you want it, and you sleep in comfortable hammocks with mosquito nets and blankets.

Day Two — Full Day Jungle Trek

Pancakes for breakfast, then your Bunong guide leads you on an 17km trek through the forest. You’ll visit Leng Ret waterfall and cave, then the impressive 50m Leng Khin Waterfall, before stopping for lunch and a swim at Leng Ong Waterfall.

The trek also passes through community forest beyond our sanctuary boundary, where you’ll see firsthand the logging pressures that make protected sanctuaries like ours so important for Mondulkiri’s future.

The afternoon takes you through working Bunong farms — cassava, chilli, lemongrass, wild rice, pineapple and cashew — before climbing out to arrive at Putang Village, home to your guides. Pick-up from the village back to Sen Monorom.

8:45 - 9:00am
Drive to the sanctuary entrance, with views across the protected forest valley that the Mondulkiri Project has helped preserve from logging.
9:00 - 10.00am
Arrive at the Jungle Lodge — our base deep in the forest. Meet your Bunong guide and hear the stories of Happy, Comvine and Princess — three rescued elephants who now live freely in this valley.
10:00 - 12:00pm
Walk down into the valley to meet the elephants. Spend the morning alongside them in their natural habitat — hand-feeding them, walking with them through the forest, and watching them move freely through the trees. Your Bunong guide will share what he knows about each elephant's personality, history and daily life.
12:00 - 2:00pm
Return to the Jungle Lodge for a traditional Cambodian lunch, prepared fresh and eaten overlooking the forest canopy. Time to rest in the hammocks and let the jungle sounds sink in.
2:00 - 4:30pm
We walk back to the river and then the waterfall, where Happy, Comvine and Princess often come to feed and swim — always on their own terms, never on a schedule. After heavy rain, river and waterfall activities may not be possible, for your safety and the elephants' safety in fast-flowing water.
5:00pm Onwards
Return to the Jungle Lodge and watch the sun go down over the forest. Relax by the fire as your Bunong guide cooks a traditional soup inside a length of bamboo — a method passed down through generations in the communities of Mondulkiri. After dinner we enjoy rice wine and card games as the jungle settles into night. Sleep in comfortable hammocks under mosquito nets.

All these times are an approximation.

7:00 - 8:00am
Wake up. Enjoy breakfast at the Jungle Lodge with its lovely views over the Otey River.
8:00 - 12:00pm
Walk along the log bridge across the Otey River. Trek through some beautiful jungle with many different types of trees, flowers, vines and bamboo. Visit Leng Ret waterfall and cave. Visit the 50m high Leng Khin Waterfall.
12:00 - 1:00pm
Lunch at the campsite alongside the beautiful Leng Ong waterfall. Stop for a swim!
1:00 - 4:30pm
Trek to the Bunong Farm to see cassava, chili peppers, lemon grass, wild rice, pineapples and cashew nut trees. Continue walking through the jungle, pass through a river and climb out of the jungle arriving at Putang Village. A car will collect us from the village and take us back to Sen Monorom.
